All rehosted past question papers and memorandums are official public examination materials from the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).
South African TVET College Qualifications: Report 191 (NATED) & NCV
Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges in South Africa provide vocational, artisan, and professional career education administered by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). Qualification structures are divided into two main streams: Report 191 (NATED) national certificates and diplomas, and the National Certificate (Vocational) [NCV].
Engineering Studies (NATED N1–N6)
Engineering Studies operate on an intensive trimester calendar with three 10-week instructional terms per year:
- Trimester 1: January to April (Examinations: March/April)
- Trimester 2: May to August (Examinations: July/August)
- Trimester 3: September to November (Examinations: November)
Students write 4 subjects per level. Completing N1–N3 earns the National Certificate in Engineering, while N4–N6 combined with 24 months (or 2,000 hours) of verified in-service apprenticeship training qualifies for the prestigious National N Diploma.
Business Studies (NATED N4–N6)
Business Studies qualifications operate on a semester calendar with two terms per academic year:
- Semester 1: January to June (Examinations: May/June)
- Semester 2: July to November (Examinations: October/November)
Instructional offerings include Financial Accounting, Management Communication, Marketing Management, Public Relations, and Entrepreneurship. After passing N6 and completing 18 months of verified workplace administration experience, graduates receive the National N Diploma in Business Management.
National Certificate (Vocational) [NCV Levels 2, 3 & 4]
NCV is an alternative high-school matric pathway offered at TVET colleges, registered at NQF Levels 2, 3, and 4. NCV combines general education (Mathematics/Mathematical Literacy, English First Additional Language, and Life Orientation) with four specialized vocational subjects (such as Electrical Infrastructure Construction, Civil Engineering, IT and Computer Science, or Finance). Examinations are written annually in November with supplementary sessions in March.
Examination Pass Requirements & Continuous Assessment (ICASS)
To qualify to write the national examination for any TVET subject, students must obtain a minimum Internal Continuous Assessment (ICASS) mark of 40% during the term. The final composite result is calculated from both the ICASS mark and the national examination mark. An examination sub-minimum of 40% is required in each paper to achieve a pass and earn certificate credits.

What is the difference between NATED (Report 191) and NCV programmes in TVET colleges?
NATED (Report 191) programmes are trimester-based for Engineering Studies (N1-N6) and semester-based for Business Studies (N4-N6), leading to the National N Diploma after completing N6 plus 18 months of relevant workplace experience. NCV (National Certificate Vocational) programmes are 3-year full-time qualifications (Levels 2, 3, and 4) combining vocational skills with fundamental subjects such as Mathematics and Life Orientation.
When are TVET college national examinations written each year?
TVET Engineering Studies (N1-N6) examinations are written in three trimesters: Trimester 1 (March/April), Trimester 2 (July/August), and Trimester 3 (November). TVET Business Studies (N4-N6) examinations take place twice a year in June and November. NCV examinations are written annually in October/November.
What is the pass mark required for TVET college NATED subjects?
