1. MS Excel: Advanced Formula Syntax & Nesting
The most common mark loss in Paper 1 is syntax errors in lookup and conditional functions. Memorise these exact structures:
• VLOOKUP Formula:
Example:
=VLOOKUP(lookup_value, table_array, col_index_num, [range_lookup])Example:
=VLOOKUP(B3, $F$2:$H$15, 3, FALSE) (Always use $ for absolute table array, and FALSE for exact match).
• Nested IF Statement:
=IF(C4 >= 80, "Distinction", IF(C4 >= 50, "Pass", "Fail"))
• Conditional Counting & Summing:
=COUNTIF(D2:D50, ">=50")=SUMIF(GenderRange, "Female", AmountRange)=COUNTIFS(BranchRange, "Gauteng", GradeRange, 12)
2. MS Access: Queries, Calculated Fields & Validation
| Feature | Required Syntax / Criteria | Exam Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Calculated Field | DiscountPrice: [Price] * 0.85 |
Creates custom column on the fly without storing redundant data. |
| Wildcard Text Search | Like "J*" or Like "*Cape*" |
Finds text starting with 'J' or containing 'Cape'. |
| Date Range Criteria | Between #2026/01/01# And #2026/12/31# |
Extracts records within a specific year. Hash tags # are mandatory. |
| Validation Rule & Text | Rule: >=0 And <=100 | Text: "Enter mark between 0 and 100" |
Ensures data integrity at data entry point. |

Paper 2: Theory Examination (150 Marks · 3 Hours)
1. Hardware & Processing Technologies
- CPU & Cache: Fast SRAM integrated directly onto processor die. L1 is fastest/smallest, L3 is shared across cores. Prevents CPU bottleneck by holding frequently executed instructions.
- RAM vs Storage: RAM is volatile temporary working memory; NVMe SSD is high-speed non-volatile solid-state secondary storage utilizing flash memory.
- Virtual Memory: A portion of secondary storage reserved by the OS to function as overflow RAM when physical RAM is exhausted. (Thrashing occurs when computer continuously swaps data between RAM and SSD).
2. Cybersecurity Threats & Defensive Measures
| Cyber Threat | How It Operates | Prevention Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| Phishing | Deceptive emails posing as legitimate institutions (banks) to steal passwords. | Verify URL security certificates, never click unverified links, check sender headers. |
| Ransomware | Malware that encrypts user files and demands cryptocurrency payment for decryption key. | Air-gapped offline backups, updated antivirus, zero-trust network policies. |
| Spyware / Keylogger | Software installed covertly that logs every keystroke and sends to a third party. | Anti-malware scans, virtual on-screen keyboards for banking passwords. |
| DDoS Attack | Botnet of compromised devices overwhelms server with illegitimate traffic. | Cloudflare/DDoS mitigation filters, rate limiting, scalable server bandwidth. |
